Antonio Conte has fuelled fresh speculation over his next managerial move after revealing the type of club he would like to take charge of.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham boss is currently without a club after leaving Napoli, but his latest comments have attracted attention because Manchester United are among the teams he has previously been linked with.
Conte did not specifically name United. However, the Italian made it clear that he wants his next challenge to involve a historic club that is determined to return to the top.
Conte wants to revive a fallen giant
Speaking about his future, Conte explained that he would be attracted by a club with a major history but one that has struggled to maintain its former level.
The 57-year-old said he would like to take on a project where he could restore the club’s identity and push it back towards competing for major trophies.
That description has inevitably led to Manchester United being mentioned, although Conte stopped short of confirming that Old Trafford is his preferred destination. AC Milan and Juventus are also among the clubs that could fit the profile he described.
Manchester United speculation grows
Conte’s comments come at a particularly interesting moment for Manchester United.
The Red Devils have endured a difficult beginning to the campaign under Michael Carrick, increasing speculation about the manager’s position. Conte’s availability has therefore naturally made him one of the names being discussed as a possible alternative.
The Italian also suggested that he could consider taking charge of a team during the season if the opportunity was considered worthwhile. That would represent an important change from his usual preference for beginning a new project in the summer.
However, there is currently no confirmation that Manchester United have offered Conte the job, and the manager himself has not publicly said that he wants to replace Carrick.
Conte still sees England as an attractive destination
Conte also spoke positively about the financial strength of English football.
Having previously won the Premier League with Chelsea, the Italian knows the English game well and believes clubs in the division have enormous financial power compared with their European rivals.
For Conte, though, money alone would not be enough. He stressed the importance of having a clear footballing vision and making the right decisions in the transfer market.
A manager built for high-pressure jobs
Conte’s record explains why his comments have generated so much interest.
The Italian has won league titles with Juventus, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Napoli, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most successful modern coaches.
His time at Chelsea was particularly impressive, with Conte taking the club to the Premier League title in his first season in English football.
Now, the former Napoli manager appears to be waiting for a project that matches his ambitions.
Manchester United may fit that description, but for now Conte’s comments should be viewed as a hint rather than confirmation of his next destination.
