Lamine Yamal Left Out of 2026 Golden Boy Finalists: Here’s Why

Lamine Yamal will not have the opportunity to defend his Golden Boy title in 2026, despite remaining one of the most highly rated young footballers in the world.

The Barcelona and Spain star was absent when the official list of 25 finalists for this year’s award was announced on October 5. His omission may initially appear surprising given his continued rise at the highest level of the game. However, there is a clear reason behind his absence.

Yamal already won the Golden Boy award in 2024, becoming the youngest player ever to receive the prestigious prize. Under the Golden Boy’s established rules and conventions, previous winners are not eligible to win the award again.

Why isn’t Lamine Yamal nominated?

The Golden Boy award is presented annually to recognize the best young player competing for a European club.

Yamal still fits the age profile for the award, but his previous triumph prevents him from appearing among the 25 finalists this year. The official Golden Boy organization confirmed that although Yamal ranked second in the latest Top 100, he was excluded from the final selection because a player cannot win the award twice.

That means his absence should not be interpreted as a reflection of his performances.

In fact, Yamal remains one of the biggest names in the conversation surrounding the world’s best young players. His development at Barcelona has seen him move beyond the category of promising teenager and establish himself as a major star on the international stage.

Yamal won the award at just 17

Yamal made history when he claimed the 2024 Golden Boy award at only 17 years old.

That victory placed him among an impressive group of previous winners, including Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fàbregas, Sergio Agüero, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham.

His continued success has also been recognized by another major individual award.

Yamal is the reigning Kopa Trophy winner and remains eligible for the 2026 edition of that prize, which is awarded at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. Unlike the Golden Boy, the Kopa Trophy allows previous winners to compete again. Yamal has already won the award twice and is among the nominees for a possible third consecutive triumph.

Barcelona could still have another Golden Boy winner

While Yamal is missing from the shortlist, Barcelona remains strongly represented.

Three players from the Catalan club feature among the 25 finalists: Pau Cubarsí, Marc Bernal and Xavi Espart. Cubarsí is widely regarded as one of the leading contenders after an outstanding season with Barcelona and Spain.

Cubarsí’s case has been strengthened by his performances for the Spanish national team, including being named the best young player at the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 shortlist contains 25 players representing 14 countries, with Premier League clubs providing the largest number of finalists. The winner will be selected by the Golden Boy international jury and announced later this year.

Yamal has a bigger prize in sight

Although he cannot compete for another Golden Boy trophy, Yamal still has the opportunity to add another major individual honor to his collection.

The Barcelona forward is among the nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or and is also in contention for another Kopa Trophy.

So, while his name is surprisingly missing from the Golden Boy shortlist, there is little doubt that Yamal remains firmly at the center of the world’s biggest individual awards.

His absence from the Golden Boy race is therefore not because he has fallen out of contention among Europe’s best young players. Quite the opposite: he is missing because he has already won it.
