Rafael Márquez’s time with the New York Red Bulls ended more than a decade ago, but memories of his departure remain vivid for people who worked alongside him.
Fernando Ruiz, a longtime equipment manager at the club, recently recalled Márquez’s exit and described an emotional farewell for the former Barcelona and Mexico star. Ruiz said he had hoped Márquez would leave a much bigger mark on the New York franchise.
An emotional goodbye
Ruiz remembered Márquez with particular affection, saying that players he works with eventually become like family. His disappointment came from believing that the Mexican defender had the ability to become one of the defining players in the club’s history.
According to Ruiz, their final goodbye was emotional, with the two sharing an embrace as Márquez prepared to leave the team. Ruiz also kept a shirt Márquez had given him after being selected for the MLS All-Star Game.
Márquez’s professional attitude remembered
The former Red Bulls defender also left an impression on people inside the dressing room for his approach to training.
Ruiz recalled Márquez staying after sessions alongside Thierry Henry to work on free kicks, even after other members of the squad had left. Former Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles likewise remembered Márquez as a serious professional and a respectful teammate.
A difficult chapter in New York
Márquez joined the Red Bulls in August 2010 after his successful spell with Barcelona. He arrived as a designated player with considerable expectations surrounding his MLS career.
His time in New York ultimately lasted until December 2012. During that period, he made 50 appearances, scoring once and providing nine assists, before moving on to Club León. His spell was also affected by injuries, suspensions and criticism over his performances.
Years later, Márquez himself reflected critically on the decision to leave European football for the United States, saying that his New York experience had been frustrating. More recently, however, he has also spoken about returning to New Jersey with positive memories of his time there.
A legacy remembered differently
Márquez’s MLS chapter may not have developed as some expected when he arrived from Barcelona, but the memories held by people who worked with him remain more personal.
For Ruiz, the former Mexico captain was more than a high-profile signing. He was a player he had hoped would become a historic figure for the franchise.
More than 13 years after Márquez left the Red Bulls, his spell in New York continues to generate discussion, particularly as he has now returned to the area in his role with the Mexican national team.
