Denmark claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Wales in the Nations League on Sunday, with Rasmus Højlund converting from the penalty spot after a costly mistake by Welsh goalkeeper Danny Ward.

The result gives Denmark a valuable three points in Group A4, while Wales are left facing a difficult battle to improve their position in the group.

Ward’s costly mistake decides the match

Wales had managed to keep Denmark at bay for much of the contest, with Ward producing several important saves to keep Craig Bellamy’s side in the game.

However, the goalkeeper’s evening took a dramatic turn late in the match. Ward came out to challenge Gustav Isaksen and conceded a penalty, giving Denmark a huge opportunity to break the deadlock.

Højlund stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, sending the ball into the net and giving Denmark the lead.

Wales struggle to create chances

Despite playing in front of their home supporters, Wales found it difficult to create clear opportunities in the attacking third.

The defeat also highlighted a worrying defensive trend for Bellamy’s team. Wales have now conceded first in seven consecutive matches and have gone nine games without keeping a clean sheet.

Bellamy will therefore have plenty to consider ahead of Wales’ next Nations League fixtures.

Denmark stay in the race

For Denmark, the victory represents an important step in their attempt to challenge for the top positions in Group A4.

Portugal remain at the summit after beating Norway 2-1 and securing qualification for the quarter-finals, while Denmark moved six points behind the group leaders following their win in Cardiff.

Højlund’s penalty also continued his strong contribution for the Danish national team, with the Manchester United striker once again proving decisive when his country needed him.

Wales face a difficult run-in

Wales now need to respond quickly if they are to improve their position in the group.

Their upcoming schedule includes an away match against Norway followed by a home meeting with Portugal, meaning Bellamy’s team will have little room for error.

The narrow defeat to Denmark will be particularly frustrating because Wales had remained competitive for long periods before Ward’s late mistake ultimately decided the contest.
