Tottenham Make Enquiry for Freiburg Striker Igor Matanovic Ahead of January Window

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly stepped up their interest in Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic as they consider adding another attacking option during the January transfer window.

According to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, Spurs have already made an enquiry about the Croatia international, although a winter move is far from straightforward. Manchester United are also understood to have contacted Freiburg regarding the 23-year-old. 

Tottenham monitoring Matanovic situation

Tottenham are assessing their options in attack after a difficult opening to the 2026/27 campaign. The club are considering whether another centre-forward could be required when the January market opens.

Matanovic has emerged as one of the names being monitored. The 1.94m striker offers a different physical profile from several of Tottenham’s current attacking options and can operate as a traditional target man.

Jacobs has indicated that Spurs are continuing to assess the situation, with a decision on whether to make a serious January push expected to come closer to the winter window. 

Matanovic enjoying impressive run at Freiburg

The striker has made a strong start to the new campaign and has attracted increasing attention from clubs in England.

Football365 reports that Matanovic has scored six goals and provided two assists in seven appearances across all competitions this season. He also enjoyed a productive 2025/26 campaign, finishing with 15 goals and four assists in 50 appearances. 

His performances have continued to increase his profile after Freiburg signed him from Eintracht Frankfurt in July 2025. The Bundesliga club’s official announcement described the Croatian forward as a player with physical strength, goalscoring ability and significant potential for further development. 

Freiburg could make January move difficult

A major obstacle for Tottenham could be Freiburg’s willingness to sell during the middle of the season.

Jacobs has suggested that Matanovic would not be easy to prise away from the Bundesliga club in January. Freiburg are under no obvious pressure to part with the striker, particularly given his importance to their current campaign. 

Matanovic is also attracting interest from Manchester United, meaning Tottenham could face competition if they decide to turn their current enquiry into a formal offer. 

For now, Tottenham’s interest remains at the monitoring and enquiry stage. The coming months should provide a clearer indication of whether Spurs will make a concrete attempt to bring the Freiburg forward to north London in January.
