Aston Villa Eye Move for Paraguayan Defensive Prospect as Brighton Lead Race

Aston Villa are looking to challenge Brighton for the signing of highly rated Paraguayan centre-back Mauro Coronel, with the teenager emerging as one of the most closely watched young defenders in South America.

Brighton are currently considered the frontrunners for Coronel, but TEAMtalk reports that Villa are monitoring the situation closely and could attempt to beat their Premier League rivals to his signature. 

Mauro Coronel Attracting Premier League Interest

Coronel has enjoyed a breakthrough year with Club Nacional in Paraguay.

The 18-year-old has established himself as a regular starter in the Paraguayan Primera División and has attracted attention with his performances at the heart of Nacional’s defence.

Standing at around 6ft 2in, the young centre-back is regarded as a promising long-term prospect. His aerial ability, composure when playing out from the back and defensive consistency have helped him stand out during the 2026 campaign. 

Coronel has also represented Paraguay at youth international level, featuring for both the Under-17 and Under-20 sides.

Brighton Currently Lead the Race

Brighton have emerged as one of the main clubs pursuing Coronel.

The Seagulls’ recruitment model has regularly focused on identifying young players with significant development potential, particularly from South America, and Coronel fits that profile.

TEAMtalk reports that Brighton are currently viewed as the frontrunners, although the competition for the defender is growing. Scouts from several English clubs have been following his progress throughout 2026. 

La Liga clubs have also reportedly entered the picture, giving Nacional’s young defender an increasingly wide range of potential destinations.

Aston Villa Monitoring the Situation

Aston Villa are among the clubs keeping a close eye on Coronel.

Unai Emery’s recruitment team are understood to have assessed the defender as they consider options for strengthening their defensive ranks in the longer term.

Villa’s interest could therefore develop into a serious challenge to Brighton, particularly if the club decides that Coronel fits its plans for the future.

The defender’s age also makes him an attractive developmental signing rather than an immediate first-team solution.

Coronel Could Be Available on a Free Transfer

One of the most interesting aspects of the situation is Coronel’s contract.

His current agreement with Nacional is due to expire at the end of December 2026. That could allow him to leave as a free agent once the Paraguayan season concludes, although the precise circumstances around his departure could influence how any deal is structured. 

Nacional are keen to keep Coronel for the remainder of their domestic campaign, meaning a move before the end of the current season appears unlikely.

That gives Brighton, Aston Villa and other interested clubs additional time to assess the player and negotiate his future.

Agent Confirms European Interest

Coronel’s representative, Renato Bittar, has previously acknowledged that European clubs have been watching the defender.

Bittar has stressed the importance of allowing the teenager to continue playing regularly and developing rather than rushing his next career move. 

That approach could mean Coronel remains with Nacional until the end of the season before making the next major step in his career.

Villa and Brighton Could Battle for Coronel

The growing interest in Coronel highlights how quickly his reputation has developed.

Brighton currently appear to have established themselves near the front of the race, but Aston Villa are monitoring the same player and could make the contest more complicated.

With his Nacional contract approaching its expiry and several European clubs reportedly watching, Coronel’s next move could become one of the more interesting young-defender transfer stories to follow.

For now, though, Nacional’s priority is keeping the 18-year-old focused on finishing the Paraguayan campaign.
