Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio is facing another spell away from football after the club confirmed that he will undergo surgery for a stress fracture in his right tibia. The operation is scheduled for Thursday.
The 23-year-old had been working his way back toward full fitness after an injury-hit start to the season. However, continued discomfort in his right leg has now led Real Madrid and the player to opt for surgery.
Real Madrid Confirm Asencio’s Injury
Real Madrid’s medical report states that Asencio has a stress fracture in the tibia of his right leg and will undergo an operation.
The club has not officially announced a recovery period. Reports from Spanish media have suggested that the defender could be out for approximately two to four months, depending on his recovery after the procedure.
The problem follows several months of fitness difficulties for Asencio. He also suffered a muscle injury in his right thigh on July 30, which delayed his preparations for the new campaign.
Asencio Has Yet to Play This Season
The latest setback comes before Asencio has been able to make his competitive debut for Real Madrid this season.
He had returned to the squad after recovering from his earlier muscle problem but had not featured on the pitch. Last season, meanwhile, the defender made 34 appearances for the Spanish giants.
His latest injury means his return to action will now have to wait until after surgery and a period of rehabilitation.
Real Madrid Face Another Defensive Absence
Asencio’s absence adds another complication to Real Madrid’s defensive situation.
José Mourinho has been using Ibrahima Konaté and Dean Huijsen as regular centre-back options, while Antonio Rüdiger is also available. Éder Militão, meanwhile, continues his recovery from the hamstring problem that has kept him out since April.
With Asencio unavailable for the foreseeable future, Real Madrid will have fewer natural options in central defence during the coming weeks.
Surgery Now the Priority
For Asencio, the immediate focus will be on Thursday’s operation and the rehabilitation that follows.
Real Madrid will monitor his progress before determining when he can resume normal training and eventually return to competitive football. The exact timeline should become clearer as his recovery develops.
The defender will now hope that surgery provides a long-term solution to the problem and allows him to return to the squad fully fit.
