Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future has become the subject of fresh speculation, but the Portuguese Football Federation has rejected reports that the Al Nassr forward has decided to retire from international football.
The uncertainty emerged after Ronaldo’s recent departure from the Portugal camp, which prompted reports about a possible retirement and even claims that he could face a lengthy suspension. The federation has now moved to clarify the situation.
Portugal Denies Ronaldo Has Retired
According to Ricardo Quaresma, a spokesperson for the Portuguese Football Federation, Ronaldo has not communicated any decision to end his international career.
The federation’s position is that the 41-year-old remains available for Portugal and could return to the squad if selected by head coach Jorge Jesus.
That directly contradicts the reports suggesting that Ronaldo had already made a decision about his future with the national team.
No Six-Month Suspension
Another claim surrounding the situation involved a possible six-month suspension after Ronaldo left the national-team camp.
The Portuguese federation has also denied that such a punishment is in place. Its spokesperson indicated that Ronaldo would be able to join the squad normally if Jorge Jesus includes him in a future selection.
That leaves the immediate situation between Ronaldo, Jesus and the federation unresolved, but it also means the door remains open for the Portugal captain to return.
Ronaldo Remains Part of Portugal’s Plans
Ronaldo was included in Jorge Jesus’ first Portugal squad for the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League, alongside a number of the country’s established stars.
Portugal’s current Nations League campaign includes matches against Denmark, Norway and Wales, with the team entering the competition as the reigning champion after winning the 2025 edition.
For now, there is therefore no confirmed retirement from Ronaldo and no confirmed six-month suspension. His next involvement with Portugal will depend on the decisions made by the player and Jorge Jesus.
The Next Chapter Remains Open
Ronaldo’s international career has already entered another significant stage under a new Portugal manager. Jorge Jesus has taken over following Roberto Martínez’s spell in charge, while Ronaldo remains one of the experienced figures in the squad.
The latest clarification from the Portuguese Football Federation means speculation about an immediate international retirement has been put aside for now.
Whether Ronaldo returns to the Portugal squad in the next international window will ultimately depend on the selection decisions and how the current situation develops.
