Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp after a tense period surrounding the national team, with the veteran forward saying he will eventually explain what led to his decision.

Ronaldo confirmed his departure on social media after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and following head coach Jorge Jesus’ press conference. The Portugal captain did not reveal the full reason for leaving, but said he would explain the circumstances “in due time.”

The situation comes just days after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway. He did not enter the match despite warming up for around 30 minutes during the second half.

Ronaldo’s decision comes after Norway controversy

Ronaldo had been expected to play a role against Norway, but Jesus ultimately chose not to send him onto the pitch.

The Portugal manager later acknowledged that asking Ronaldo to warm up without eventually bringing him on could understandably have caused frustration. However, Jesus has denied that there was a serious disagreement between himself and the forward.

The coach also insisted that Ronaldo had not refused to train. According to Jesus, the forward had completed individual work in the gym and carried out exercises away from the main team session.

Ronaldo confirms he has left the squad

The uncertainty increased when Ronaldo confirmed that he had decided to leave the national team’s training camp.

His announcement came after a conversation with the Portuguese federation president. While Ronaldo made clear that he had a specific reason for his decision, he chose not to disclose it immediately.

That has left the circumstances surrounding his departure open to questions, particularly with Portugal preparing for another Nations League fixture.

What did Jorge Jesus say?

Jesus attempted to play down suggestions of a major dispute with his captain.

The coach said there had been no significant incident and explained that he had discussed the situation with Ronaldo. He also acknowledged that the decision to have Ronaldo warm up against Norway before ultimately leaving him on the bench was something that could have frustrated the player.

Ronaldo’s decision to leave the camp nevertheless came shortly after the coach’s press conference and his meeting with the federation president.

At this stage, neither Ronaldo nor the Portuguese federation has provided a full explanation of what happened.

Ronaldo promises to explain his reasons

The biggest unanswered question is why Ronaldo chose to leave the Portugal camp at this particular moment.

The 41-year-old has promised that he will eventually give Portuguese supporters his version of events. Until then, reports about a possible disagreement with the coaching staff remain unconfirmed.

Reuters also reported that Ronaldo and Jesus were both absent when the rest of the Portugal squad arrived at their hotel, adding further uncertainty to the situation.

For now, Ronaldo’s own message is the clearest indication that more information could emerge later.

Portugal must now prepare for its upcoming Nations League commitments without knowing whether the captain’s departure will have any further consequences for the squad.
