The United States men’s national team is entering a new chapter after Tim Ream announced his retirement from international football.

Ream had been the captain during the 2026 World Cup and finished his international career with 86 appearances. His departure leaves Mauricio Pochettino with an important decision as the USMNT begins its preparations for the next World Cup cycle.

The captaincy is not necessarily limited to one established choice. Several experienced players have already worn the armband, while others have emerged as important figures within the squad.

Tyler Adams

Tyler Adams is one of the most familiar names in the conversation.

The Bournemouth midfielder captained the United States at the 2022 World Cup and also wore the armband during the team’s recent victory over Peru. Pochettino has publicly highlighted Adams’ leadership and his ability to connect younger players with the coaching staff, supporters and the wider meaning of representing the United States.

His previous experience as a USMNT captain gives him a clear connection to the role, although the final decision will rest with Pochettino.

Chris Richards

Chris Richards represents another possible continuation of the leadership established by Ream.

The Crystal Palace defender played alongside Ream for several years and has developed into an important part of the American defense. His position also gives him a natural connection to the captaincy, particularly after spending time learning from the former USMNT leader.

Ream himself previously spoke positively about Richards’ potential as a future captain, while stressing that the ultimate decision would depend on what the coaching staff values in its leader.

Antonee Robinson

Antonee Robinson has already taken on additional responsibility during the current international window.

The Fulham defender captained the United States in the team’s 4-2 victory over Chile, giving him another opportunity to demonstrate his leadership on the international stage. He also brings significant experience, including appearances at two World Cups and more than 60 caps for the national team.

Robinson’s experience and regular role at club and international level make him part of the wider leadership discussion.

Sebastian Berhalter

Sebastian Berhalter is a younger option who has risen quickly within the USMNT setup.

After establishing himself during the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, Berhalter continued his development and became a more prominent part of the national-team picture. He has also worn the captain’s armband at club level and has been described as a vocal presence on the field.

His long-term case will depend partly on how consistently he establishes himself as a starter for the United States.

Pochettino Has a New Leadership Decision

The USMNT now has several players with captaincy experience rather than a single obvious successor to Ream.

Pochettino has already indicated that choosing a new captain is something the coaching staff will address. For now, Adams, Richards, Robinson and Berhalter all represent different possibilities as the United States moves into a new international cycle.

The next few international windows should provide more clues about who eventually becomes the regular voice of the USMNT.
