Tim Ream’s remarkable international career appears to be entering its final chapter following the United States’ 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The veteran defender was not included in Mauricio Pochettino’s first post-World Cup squad for the September international window, as the USMNT began building toward the next cycle and a new generation of players.

Ream has not officially announced his international retirement, but the 38-year-old’s future with the national team has become increasingly uncertain.

Ream Captained the USA at the 2026 World Cup

Ream played a major role in the United States’ World Cup campaign on home soil.

The Charlotte FC defender started four of the USA’s five matches and wore the captain’s armband in those games. The tournament also made Ream the oldest field player in USMNT World Cup history.

The USA ultimately reached the Round of 16 before its campaign ended.

A 16-Year International Career

Ream made his USMNT debut in November 2010 in a 1–0 victory over South Africa.

Since then, he has earned 86 international appearances, scoring once and providing four assists. He was also part of the U.S. teams that won the Concacaf Nations League in 2019 and 2023.

His international career included appearances at both the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, with Ream starting every match he played at the 2022 tournament.

The USMNT Begins a New Era

Pochettino’s September squad featured a significant number of younger players as the United States began its preparations for the next World Cup cycle.

Ream was among several established veterans left out of the squad. His absence does not by itself confirm retirement, but it underlines the transition taking place within the national team.

U.S. Soccer has nevertheless continued to recognize Ream’s contribution. The federation arranged a special recognition for the St. Louis native before the USA’s September 29 meeting with Chile, celebrating his years of service to the national team.

What Comes Next for Tim Ream?

For now, there has been no official announcement confirming that Ream has retired from international football.

What is clear is that his role has changed following the 2026 World Cup, with Pochettino beginning to develop the squad for the next four-year cycle.

After more than 15 years representing the United States and captaining his country at a home World Cup, Ream’s next chapter could soon take place exclusively at club level.
