Ronaldo-Jesus Dispute: Details Emerge Over Portugal Captain’s Reduced Role

Fresh details have emerged surrounding the situation between Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus after the Al Nassr forward was left on the bench during Portugal’s recent Nations League victory over Norway.

Portugal won the match 2-1, but Ronaldo watched the entire game from the substitutes’ bench after previously playing 65 minutes against Wales. According to Pedro Sousa, executive director of Portuguese newspaper Record, the decision was connected to an understanding that had reportedly been reached between Ronaldo and Jesus before the latest international squad was announced.  

Sousa claims that Ronaldo and Jesus discussed his involvement with the national team in August.

The reported understanding was designed to manage the veteran forward’s playing time rather than have him feature in every international fixture.

According to Sousa, the two sides had identified four matches in which Ronaldo would play during the current period, with his international future then due to be reviewed ahead of the November camp.  

The arrangement was reportedly a private understanding rather than an official agreement announced by the Portuguese Football Federation.

Jesus’ decision raises questions

The situation changed when Ronaldo was left out of the starting lineup against Norway.

Sousa claims Jesus subsequently handled the arrangement differently from what had initially been discussed between the pair.

He also said the Portugal coach had indicated that Ronaldo would receive around 30 minutes of playing time, but the forward ultimately did not enter the match.

That has created questions over how the original understanding was interpreted and why Ronaldo’s expected involvement did not materialise.  
