Rio Ngumoha Left Out of England Squad for Spain Clash

Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha will not be part of England’s matchday squad for Saturday’s Nations League meeting with Spain at Wembley.

The 18-year-old received his first senior England call-up earlier this month, but Thomas Tuchel has decided not to include the young forward in the squad for the opening fixture against the reigning world and European champions.

Ngumoha misses out against Spain

Ngumoha travelled with England during their pre-World Cup preparations in Florida and was among five supplementary players involved with the senior group.

His international breakthrough came when Tuchel surprisingly introduced him during England’s 1-0 friendly victory over New Zealand.

The Liverpool youngster impressed during his second-half appearance and became the fifth-youngest player to represent England at senior level.

However, he will have to wait for another opportunity to make his competitive debut for the Three Lions.

Rapid rise at Liverpool

Ngumoha’s progress at club level has been remarkably quick.

He became the youngest player to start a first-team match for Liverpool when he featured against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup during the 2024-25 campaign.

His breakthrough continued last season when he scored a dramatic late winner in Liverpool’s 3-2 Premier League victory at Newcastle.

That goal further highlighted why the teenager is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in English football.

Limited starts this season

Ngumoha has already made three Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season, although only one has come from the starting XI.

Despite his limited senior experience, his performances have been enough to attract the attention of England manager Thomas Tuchel.

His inclusion in the wider England group represents another significant step in his development, even though he will not feature against Spain.

England’s clash with Spain at Wembley provides a difficult opening assignment in the Nations League.
