Cristiano Ronaldo Could Return to Santiago Bernabéu for 2027 Nations League Final

Cristiano Ronaldo could be heading back to the Santiago Bernabéu in 2027 if Portugal reaches the UEFA Nations League final and Spain’s hosting proposal is accepted.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has submitted its proposal to UEFA to stage the final phase of the 2027 Nations League in Spain, with the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid and José Zorrilla in Valladolid named as the proposed venues. 

RFEF president Rafael Louzán confirmed that the necessary documentation has been submitted as Spain looks to bring the tournament’s decisive matches to the country.

Cristiano Ronaldo Bernabéu Return?

The proposed venue immediately creates the possibility of a memorable Cristiano Ronaldo return to the Bernabéu.

Ronaldo spent nine seasons at Real Madrid after joining the club in 2009, becoming one of the most prolific goalscorers in the club’s history before leaving for Juventus in 2018.

If Portugal reaches the 2027 Nations League final, Ronaldo could potentially walk onto the Bernabéu pitch once again — this time wearing the Portugal shirt.

It would be a particularly notable reunion given the relationship between Ronaldo and the Madrid stadium, where he produced some of the defining performances of his Real Madrid career.

However, Ronaldo’s appearance in the match is not confirmed. Portugal would first have to reach the final, while Spain must also be awarded hosting rights by UEFA.

Spain Wants the Nations League Final in Madrid

Spain’s proposal includes two stadiums: the Santiago Bernabéu and José Zorrilla.

According to Louzán, the federation needed to propose two venues with different capacities and a relatively short distance between them. The Spanish bid was prepared with the cooperation of Real Madrid and Real Valladolid. 

The final stage of the competition is scheduled for June 9–13, 2027. 

The Bernabéu has been identified as the preferred venue for the final, while José Zorrilla would form part of the proposed hosting arrangement for the other matches.

A Special Night for Ronaldo and Real Madrid Fans

Should Portugal reach the final, Ronaldo’s potential return would add another layer of interest to the event.

The Portuguese forward is still representing his country and recently said that he wants to continue competing at international level, although he acknowledged that retirement is approaching. 

That makes the possibility of a major international final at his former home particularly intriguing.

Ronaldo’s last competitive years at the Bernabéu were filled with major Champions League nights and memorable goals. A return in a Portugal shirt would give supporters an entirely different occasion to remember.

Bernabéu Awaits UEFA Decision

For now, Spain’s proposal remains a bid rather than a confirmed hosting decision.

UEFA will ultimately decide where the 2027 Nations League final phase will be staged. If Spain gets the tournament, and Portugal makes it through to the final, Ronaldo could have the opportunity to return to the Bernabéu for one more major international occasion.
