Republic of Ireland Beat Israel 3-0 After Tense Nations League Build-Up

The Republic of Ireland secured a 3-0 victory over Israel in Debrecen, Hungary, but the result came after a week of intense debate surrounding the fixture.

The Irish players had decided not to take part in several traditional pre-match formalities. There were no handshakes between the teams, no exchange of pennants between captains Dara O’Shea and Manor Solomon, and the Ireland squad bowed their heads during Israel’s national anthem. 

The Irish players also wore black armbands, with the Football Association of Ireland saying the gesture was in recognition of lives lost during the Gaza conflict. 

Ireland make fast start in Debrecen

Despite everything surrounding the match, Ireland produced an impressive opening 25 minutes.

Troy Parrott opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Adam Idah doubled the advantage just two minutes later.

Jack Moylan then added a third goal in the 25th minute to give Ireland a commanding 3-0 lead before half-time. 

Israel were unable to find a response after the interval, allowing Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side to comfortably see out the victory.

Hallgrimsson says players raised awareness

After the match, Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson said his players had managed to draw international attention to the issues surrounding the fixture.

The coach acknowledged that the situation had been difficult for members of his squad and said their actions had helped raise awareness beyond Ireland. 

Hallgrimsson also said that the players’ views about the controversy were not a factor in his team selection.

According to the manager, selection was based on which players he believed could deliver the strongest performance for Ireland.

Bazunu withdraws from Ireland squad

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was at the centre of another major development before kick-off.

Following a meeting at the team’s hotel on Saturday, Ireland’s players voted by a significant majority to play the fixture. Bazunu subsequently decided to withdraw from the squad, explaining that he felt it would be wrong for him to participate in the match and the return fixture.

Hallgrimsson said Bazunu’s decision was respected by the squad, although the timing created difficulties for the team. The goalkeeper is expected to remain available for Ireland’s match against Austria, but not the next meeting with Israel. 

Why has the fixture been so controversial?

Ireland and Israel were drawn together in UEFA Nations League Group B3 in February, alongside Austria and Kosovo.

The fixture attracted significant criticism in Ireland, with campaigners calling for the Football Association of Ireland to boycott the matches because of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The Irish Sport for Palestine campaign organised calls for the team to withdraw, while more than 160 Irish athletes reportedly signed an open letter urging Ireland not to play. 

The FAI ultimately decided to fulfil the fixtures, with the organisation citing the potential sporting consequences of withdrawing.

The first match was moved to Hungary, while the return fixture is scheduled to take place in Backa Topola, Serbia, on 4 October. 

Ireland’s football protest continues to attract attention

The events before kick-off ensured that the match received attention well beyond the football itself.

Ireland’s decision not to participate in handshakes or pennant exchanges, together with the players’ gesture during the Israeli anthem and the wearing of black armbands, became a central part of the story surrounding the game.

After scoring Ireland’s third goal, Moylan also removed his armband and kissed it before celebrating with the Ireland badge.

The match therefore combined a significant sporting result with a highly contentious political backdrop.

What comes next for Ireland?

Ireland will now turn their attention to Austria before facing Israel again in Serbia on 4 October.

The 3-0 victory gives Hallgrimsson’s team three important points in Group B3, while the circumstances surrounding the two Israel fixtures mean the debate is likely to continue ahead of the return match.

For Ireland, the immediate priority will be maintaining their progress in the Nations League while managing the difficult circumstances that have surrounded this group campaign.
