Mathis Albert has made American soccer history after the 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund prospect scored for the United States men’s national team against Chile.
Albert’s goal came during a memorable night for a young USMNT side, which defeated Chile 4-2 in St. Louis. The teenager’s late strike made him the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history, adding another remarkable milestone to his rapid rise.
Mathis Albert Writes His Name Into USMNT History
Albert entered the international spotlight after earning his first senior call-up from Mauricio Pochettino.
The Borussia Dortmund youngster had already attracted attention before making his senior international debut. Earlier this year, he became the youngest American to appear in the Bundesliga, breaking a record previously held by Gio Reyna.
His latest achievement, however, was on an even bigger stage.
Against Chile, Albert found the net in stoppage time to complete a 4-2 victory for the United States. His goal secured his place in the national team’s record books while underlining the growing importance of teenage players within Pochettino’s squad.
A Rapid Rise in Germany
Albert’s development has taken place largely in Germany since joining Borussia Dortmund’s youth setup in 2024.
Before receiving his senior USMNT opportunity, the midfielder had represented the United States at several youth levels, including the U-17 and U-19 teams. His performances eventually earned him a place among Pochettino’s young group for the September international window.
The teenager had already made history at club level by becoming the youngest American to play in the Bundesliga.
Now, he has added another record to his growing résumé.
Pochettino Giving Young Players Their Chance
Albert’s breakthrough is part of a broader youth movement within the USMNT.
Pochettino selected a heavily youthful squad for the September friendlies, with several teenagers receiving opportunities at senior level. Against Peru, Julian Hall and Justin Ellis also scored on their international debuts, while 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan became one of the youngest players ever to represent the United States.
The approach has given several emerging American talents an opportunity to experience international football before the next World Cup cycle reaches its later stages.
What Comes Next for Mathis Albert?
For Albert, the challenge now is to turn an historic debut into the beginning of a long international career.
His combination of youth, Bundesliga experience and involvement with the USMNT makes him one of the young American players attracting significant attention. His record-breaking goal against Chile provides another major moment in what has already been a rapid rise.
At only 17, Albert has now achieved something no USMNT player had done before.
And his journey is only beginning.
