Manchester City are facing a major period of uncertainty after an independent commission found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules across several seasons.

The ruling relates to alleged financial breaches covering the period from 2009-10 through 2017-18. The Premier League said the commission found City guilty of the serious financial charges brought against them, while the club has rejected the findings and confirmed its intention to appeal.

The verdict does not, however, mean that Manchester City have been relegated or stripped of trophies at this stage. The punishment will be decided separately, with the Premier League’s rules allowing for a range of possible sanctions.

What punishment could Manchester City face?

The potential consequences are significant.

Under the Premier League’s rules, sanctions can include a financial penalty, a points deduction or, in the most severe scenario, expulsion from the competition. The exact punishment has not yet been announced and will be determined at a separate hearing.

The timing of any punishment could also become an important issue because Manchester City are expected to appeal the commission’s decision.

If a sporting sanction were imposed before the appeal was completed, City could potentially face consequences before the legal process reaches its conclusion. Alternatively, delaying the punishment could create complications for other clubs competing for league positions and European qualification.

Manchester City insist they will appeal

Manchester City have strongly rejected the findings.

The club has maintained that it is innocent of the accusations and says it has evidence supporting its position. City are expected to submit an appeal before the deadline, with the case potentially continuing through another lengthy legal process.

That means the commission’s verdict is unlikely to be the final chapter in the dispute.

Could City’s trophies be affected?

Another major question concerns the trophies Manchester City won during the period covered by the case.

City won several major honours during those years, including Premier League titles and domestic cups. However, whether any trophies could actually be removed or reassigned remains unresolved.

The Premier League’s rules give the disciplinary commission broad powers when determining sanctions, but there has been no decision confirming that previously won trophies will be taken away.

Former Stoke City manager Tony Pulis, whose team lost the 2011 FA Cup final to City, has spoken about feeling affected by the situation, while also questioning whether trophies would realistically be redistributed.

What happens to Manchester City’s players?

The potential sporting consequences could also raise questions about the club’s squad.

Manchester City invested heavily in the transfer market in 2026, while several important players have long-term contracts. Erling Haaland, for example, signed a nine-year agreement in 2025.

At present, it remains unclear whether individual contracts contain clauses that could allow players to leave if the club suffers a major sporting sanction. There has been no confirmed mass departure, and City’s ability to retain their leading players will depend partly on what punishment, if any, is eventually imposed.

A legal battle that could last years

The verdict is unlikely to bring an immediate end to the Manchester City case.

The club’s appeal, the eventual decision on sanctions and any potential claims from other clubs could keep the dispute in the spotlight for a considerable period. Legal experts quoted by Reuters have warned that the wider consequences could potentially take years to resolve.

For Manchester City, the immediate priority is now clear: challenge the verdict and wait for the next stage of the disciplinary process.

Until the appeal and sanction process is completed, the full sporting consequences for the club remain unknown.
