Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp following a growing dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus, adding another dramatic chapter to the veteran forward’s international career.

The decision came shortly after Jesus addressed Ronaldo’s situation during a press conference ahead of Portugal’s Nations League meeting with Denmark. Ronaldo subsequently spoke with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença before announcing that he had decided to leave the camp.

Ronaldo confirmed his departure in a statement shared on social media, saying he would explain the reasons behind his decision to the Portuguese public at a later time.

What led to Ronaldo’s departure?

The situation had been building since Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute during that match despite being available, marking an unusual moment for the country’s record goalscorer. He warmed up during the game but was ultimately not introduced, while Gonçalo Ramos remained involved in the attack.

After the final whistle, Ronaldo went straight towards the tunnel rather than joining his teammates in greeting the Portuguese supporters.

Jesus later explained that he had initially considered using Ronaldo but changed his plans because of how the match developed. The manager also made clear that tactical decisions would be based on what he believed Portugal needed during each game.

Jorge Jesus insists there is no personal dispute

Questions over the relationship between the two intensified before Portugal’s next fixture.

Jesus denied that there was a personal problem between himself and Ronaldo, while also emphasizing that he remains responsible for decisions over who plays and when.

The coach previously worked with Ronaldo at Al Nassr, making their current situation particularly notable. Jesus has said that Ronaldo remains an important figure for Portugal, but his reputation does not guarantee him a place on the pitch.

Ronaldo says he will reveal more

Ronaldo’s decision to leave the camp has now created uncertainty around his immediate future with the national team.

The 41-year-old remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, with 146 international goals and 234 appearances. He has also previously indicated that he still believes he can contribute to the national side.

For now, Ronaldo has not provided a detailed explanation for his departure. His decision came immediately after Jesus’ press conference and a conversation with the Portuguese federation president.

Portugal’s upcoming Nations League schedule means attention will now turn to how the team responds without its captain and whether Ronaldo provides further details about what happened behind the scenes.

The next stage of the situation could have significant implications for Ronaldo’s relationship with the national team, particularly as questions about the closing phase of his international career continue.
