The United States men’s national team has entered a new phase under Mauricio Pochettino, and Cavan Sullivan has quickly become one of the clearest symbols of the youth movement taking shape.

Sullivan made his senior international debut in the USA’s 4-1 victory over Peru on September 26, starting alongside several other young players. The Philadelphia Union teenager played 62 minutes and became the fourth-youngest player to appear for the USMNT.

But while Sullivan attracted much of the attention, Pochettino’s approach against Peru was about much more than one young star.

Pochettino gives the next generation a chance

The Peru match marked the beginning of a new four-year cycle for the United States ahead of the 2030 World Cup. Pochettino used the occasion to introduce a large group of inexperienced players to international football.

Eleven players earned their first USMNT cap, including eight teenagers. Justin Ellis and Julian Hall both scored on their international debuts, while Mathis Albert won a penalty shortly after coming onto the pitch. Sebastian Berhalter also scored and provided an assist.

The starting lineup against Peru was the youngest of Pochettino’s tenure and the youngest USMNT starting XI since the March 2023 match against Grenada.

That gives a clear indication of the direction Pochettino is taking as the United States begins preparations for another World Cup cycle.

Sullivan’s impressive first appearance

Sullivan entered the spotlight even before his senior debut because of his rapid rise with Philadelphia Union.

Against Peru, the teenager showed flashes of the qualities that have generated so much attention around him. He was involved in several attacking moves and came close to scoring after finding space inside the penalty area.

He also had a memorable moment late in the first half when he found himself with an opportunity after Peru’s goalkeeper had moved away from his goal. The chance did not result in a goal, but Sullivan continued to show confidence despite the occasion being his first at senior international level.

A bigger picture for the USMNT

For Pochettino, the significance of the Peru victory extends beyond the final score.

The United States now has several years to evaluate this emerging group before the 2030 World Cup. The coach can give young players international experience, test different combinations and determine which prospects can establish themselves at senior level.

Sullivan is therefore part of a much larger project.

Players such as Justin Ellis, Julian Hall, Mathis Albert, Zavier Gozo, Neil Pierre, Peyton Miller and others were also given opportunities during the same international window.

The early signs have been encouraging in terms of opportunities: the USA followed the Peru victory with another win, beating Chile 4-2 on September 29.

Pochettino’s message to the young players

Pochettino has emphasized patience with Sullivan and the other emerging talents rather than placing all the attention on one teenager.

That approach could prove important as expectations increase around a generation that is now being introduced to the senior national team.

Sullivan may have been the headline name against Peru, but the bigger story is the number of young players being given a genuine opportunity.

With the 2030 World Cup cycle only beginning, Pochettino has plenty of time to assess the talent available to him. For Sullivan and his fellow prospects, the first step has already been taken.
