Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior is facing one of the most difficult periods of his career after receiving a four-match La Liga suspension that will rule him out of El Clasico against Barcelona and keep him sidelined from domestic action for more than a month.

The Brazilian international has endured a frustrating start to the 2026–27 season, and his recent dismissal against Villarreal has added another setback at a crucial moment for Jose Mourinho’s side.

With Real Madrid preparing for several important fixtures, Vinicius must now focus on recovering his form while serving a suspension that could keep him out of league action until November 22.

Why Was Vinicius Jr Suspended for Four Matches?

Vinicius received a straight red card during Real Madrid’s La Liga encounter with Villarreal following an incident involving defender Nathan Saliba.

The Brazilian was dismissed after pulling Saliba’s hair during an attacking move. The referee, Isidro Diaz de Mera, reviewed the incident with the assistance of VAR before showing the red card.

Vinicius then reacted angrily toward the match official, resulting in an additional disciplinary punishment.

The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary authorities imposed a four-match suspension, divided into two separate offenses.

Two matches were awarded for the physical incident involving Saliba, while another two were imposed for Vinicius’s aggressive reaction toward the referee.

Real Madrid challenged the decision, but the Appeals Committee upheld the original punishment on October 16.

The club subsequently decided to take its case to Spain’s Administrative Court of Sport.

Unless the punishment is reduced or overturned, Vinicius will miss four consecutive La Liga fixtures.

Vinicius Jr Will Miss El Clasico Against Barcelona

The most significant consequence of the suspension is Vinicius’s absence from the highly anticipated El Clasico against Barcelona on October 25.

The Brazilian is expected to miss the following league matches:

  • Real Madrid vs Sevilla — October 18
  • Barcelona vs Real Madrid — October 25
  • Racing Santander vs Real Madrid — November 1
  • Valencia vs Real Madrid — November 7

The absence comes at a particularly challenging moment for Madrid, with Barcelona enjoying an outstanding start to the season.

Hansi Flick’s side have won their opening nine La Liga matches, matching a historic record previously established by Real Madrid during the 1968–69 campaign.

Vinicius’s suspension therefore deprives Mourinho of one of his most dangerous attacking players ahead of a potentially decisive meeting between the two Spanish giants.

When Will Vinicius Jr Return for Real Madrid?

If the four-match suspension remains unchanged, Vinicius is expected to become available for Real Madrid’s La Liga fixture against Celta Vigo on November 22.

The international break in November means the Brazilian could spend more than a month without playing domestic football.

However, the suspension applies to La Liga rather than European competition.

Vinicius remains eligible to represent Real Madrid in the Champions League and could feature against RB Leipzig and AEK Athens during his domestic absence.

Those European fixtures will provide valuable opportunities for the winger to maintain match fitness and rebuild confidence.

His return to league action will ultimately depend on the outcome of Madrid’s remaining legal challenge and the completion of his suspension.

Vinicius Struggling for Form in 2026–27 Season

Beyond the disciplinary controversy, Vinicius has faced criticism for his performances during the opening months of the campaign.

The Brazilian has registered just one goal and three assists so far this season, according to figures cited by MARCA.

His dribbling statistics have also declined, with an average of approximately 1.86 successful dribbles per match.

For a player renowned for his explosive acceleration, creativity and ability to beat defenders, those numbers represent a disappointing return.

Vinicius has been a central figure in Real Madrid’s attack for several seasons, but his recent performances have fallen short of the standards he established during his most successful campaigns.

The winger has publicly acknowledged his struggles and expressed confidence in his ability to rediscover his best form.

His determination to improve will now be tested during a period when his opportunities to influence matches are limited.

Jose Mourinho Defends Vinicius Amid Growing Criticism

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has continued to support Vinicius despite the controversy surrounding his suspension.

The Portuguese coach praised the Brazilian’s character and emphasized the difficulties he faces because of the attention and pressure surrounding him.

Mourinho also suggested that Vinicius must use the coming weeks productively, particularly in training.

The manager believes the winger’s response should be focused on working harder and preparing himself for his next opportunities.

Vinicius recently showed frustration after being substituted during Real Madrid’s Champions League encounter with Roma.

However, Mourinho played down the incident, explaining that tactical changes are a normal part of football and that the Brazilian remains an important member of the squad.

The manager has also indicated that Vinicius could return to the starting lineup in European competition despite his domestic suspension.

A Month to Regain Confidence and Improve Discipline

The enforced break could provide Vinicius with an opportunity to address both the physical and psychological aspects of his performances.

With fewer competitive matches, Real Madrid’s coaching staff can devote additional time to individual training and preparation.

The winger will have an opportunity to work on his fitness, decision-making and attacking efficiency while also reflecting on the disciplinary incident that led to his suspension.

Maintaining composure during difficult matches will be particularly important.

Vinicius has frequently faced intense pressure from opponents and supporters, but avoiding unnecessary confrontations will be essential if he wants to remain consistently available for his team.

The coming weeks could therefore become an important turning point in his season.

Real Madrid Face Major Challenge Without Vinicius

Real Madrid must now navigate several important league matches without one of their most recognizable attacking players.

Mourinho will need to consider alternative combinations in attack, with other squad members expected to take greater responsibility.

The absence of Vinicius could also create opportunities for younger players, including Endrick, to earn additional playing time.

Madrid’s immediate priority will be maintaining their position in the title race, particularly with Barcelona setting a relentless pace.

Meanwhile, Vinicius will hope to return in November with renewed confidence and a stronger determination to influence the remainder of the campaign.

The four-match suspension represents a significant setback for Vinicius and Real Madrid, but it could also offer the Brazilian an opportunity to reset his season. His response when he returns will determine whether this difficult period becomes a turning point in his career.
