Vinícius Jr.’s public apology after Sunday’s El Clásico made no reference to coach Xabi Alonso’s alleged intent, The Athletic correspondent Mario Cortegana reports.
The 25-year-old winger reacted angrily after being substituted by Rodrygo in the 72nd minute, shouting “Why is it always me?” and muttering, “Always me. I’m leaving, it’ll be better to leave, I’m leaving,” as he walked toward the dressing room. On Wednesday he posted an apology on social media addressing fans, “his teammates, the club, and the president,” but did not single out Alonso.
Club sources say the statement was necessary: regardless of whether Vinícius’s frustrations were justified, the public episode required an apology both inside and outside the club. Real Madrid — where Vinícius is the third captain — was displeased by his conduct, though officials were also critical of how Alonso managed the situation.
Real Madrid chose not to fine Vinícius, believing the issue could be resolved internally. People close to the player say he deliberately avoided naming the coach because he felt hurt by Alonso’s treatment, and that he has felt the club’s backing in recent days.
With tensions simmering, every move will now be closely read. Two early tests loom: Alonso’s first press conference since the incident on Friday, and his starting XI for Saturday’s match against Valencia.
