TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD’S LIVERPOOL REUNION IN DOUBT AFTER NEW REAL MADRID CLUE

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s long-awaited return to Anfield could be delayed, with Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso seemingly unconvinced about restoring him to the starting lineup.

The former Liverpool vice-captain is set to face his boyhood club next week in the Champions League, marking his first visit to Anfield since his summer departure to Real Madrid. However, his place in the team is far from guaranteed.

Alexander-Arnold’s debut season in Spain has been disrupted by injuries, but after regaining fitness, he was widely expected to feature against Liverpool—especially after Dani Carvajal picked up an injury.

Yet, those expectations took a hit over the weekend when the England international was once again left on the bench for Madrid’s 4-0 victory over Valencia, with Federico Valverde filling in at right-back instead.

Explaining the decision, Alonso said:

“We all see Trent’s level and how complete he is. With the ball, he has the soul of a midfielder, but physically he’s very powerful.

“Since he started playing, his level has been improving. He’s getting more comfortable, and we know he’s a complete player. Because of our needs, he’s played there [at right-back], and he’s done well.”

Meanwhile, former Manchester United full-back Álvaro Carreras started on the opposite flank and even scored, seemingly cementing his place at left-back for the coming fixtures.

Alonso added:

“He’s very competitive, does everything well, stays focused when the ball is out of reach, is strong in duels, and knows how to make the right decision. It’s great to have him with us.”

As the Madrid boss weighs up his options for the trip to Merseyside, Alexander-Arnold has addressed speculation from Liverpool fans that he began learning Spanish long before his transfer was confirmed.

In a video shared on social media, the 26-year-old explained:

“Hi, I’m Trent. I started learning Spanish with Sara five months ago. I didn’t speak any Spanish before. I wanted to learn to communicate better with my team-mates, my coach, and the Madrid fans — and adapt better to the culture.

“The lessons were very football-based — press conferences, interviews, and everyday vocabulary I need at the club. It’s helped me a lot, and I’ve really enjoyed every session.”

Alexander-Arnold’s availability for the Anfield clash remains uncertain, but should Alonso opt for Valverde again, the defender’s emotional reunion with Liverpool supporters might have to wait a little longer.
