Lionel Messi, captain of Inter Miami, has finally opened up about the real reason he chose to move to Major League Soccer (MLS) instead of joining Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal, despite receiving a massive offer from the club.
After leaving Paris Saint-Germain, Messi was on the verge of signing with Al-Hilal in what would have been one of the most lucrative contracts in football history. However, he ultimately decided to join Inter Miami — a choice that, as he revealed, was driven more by family and lifestyle than money.
The 38-year-old World Cup winner recently extended his contract with Inter Miami until 2028, continuing a remarkable chapter in the United States that began two years ago and has since drawn unprecedented global attention.
Messi explained his decision during a talk at the American Business Forum, reflecting on his career transitions:
“In Barcelona, we were extremely happy — my family, my kids — everything we had was there. I arrived when I was 13; my entire life was built in that city. Leaving was not easy at all.”
“In Paris, it was different. I didn’t enjoy my time there as much. Everything was new to me — a new club, a new environment. We adapted and experienced positive moments, but it was never truly home.”
“Coming to Inter Miami was a family decision. From the moment we arrived, the experience has been wonderful. Living in this beautiful city, and feeling the warmth and affection of the people from day one — that made all the difference.”
Messi emphasized that his move to the United States was about balance, comfort, and new challenges rather than financial gain.
Meanwhile, Abdullah Hammad, CEO of Mahd Academy, revealed new details about Messi’s previous interest in Saudi Arabia. Speaking on the “Socrates” podcast by Thmanyah, Hammad disclosed that there had been genuine discussions about Messi joining Saudi Pro League (Roshn League) during the MLS off-season.
“There was a plan for Messi to be part of Mahd Academy programs, especially in the youth categories,” Hammad said. “He even showed real interest in joining the Saudi league for a short stint during the MLS break — similar to what David Beckham did when he played for AC Milan while with LA Galaxy.”
However, the proposal was ultimately declined by the Saudi Ministry of Sports, halting what could have been a historic short-term move.
Messi’s focus now remains on continuing his journey in Miami — a city that has become the new heart of his footballing story.
