Lionel Messi Confirms His Decision After Emotional Argentina Farewell

Lionel Messi has expressed confidence in his decision to bring his Argentina international career to a close, following an emotional farewell in front of the home supporters in Buenos Aires.

The Argentine legend’s final appearance for the national team came against Benin at the Estadio Monumental on October 6, 2026. Argentina celebrated the occasion with a 3-0 victory, giving their captain a memorable send-off in front of his own fans.

Messi reflects on an unforgettable Argentina career

After more than two decades representing his country, Messi has reached the end of an extraordinary international journey. His time with Argentina brought moments of disappointment as well as historic triumphs, ultimately establishing him as one of the most influential players in the nation’s football history.

Following the farewell, Messi acknowledged the emotional difficulty of leaving the national team behind. He admitted that he already missed wearing Argentina’s famous blue-and-white shirt, despite feeling certain that his decision was the right one.

His message reflected the deep connection he has built with the national team and its supporters throughout his career.

A legacy built on historic achievements

Messi leaves Argentina having helped deliver some of the greatest moments in the country’s football history. His achievements include the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa América titles, cementing his status as a national icon.

His journey was not always straightforward. Earlier disappointments in major international finals brought intense scrutiny, but the forward eventually experienced the success that had eluded him for much of his career.

Those victories transformed his international story and gave Argentine supporters unforgettable celebrations.

Messi thanks those who supported his journey

The Argentine star also expressed gratitude to the people who accompanied him throughout his career, including his family, teammates, coaches and supporters.

He paid tribute to the influence of Diego Maradona and acknowledged his faith in God, whom he credited as an important part of his journey.

His farewell was more than a goodbye to international football. It was an opportunity to recognise the people and experiences that helped shape his remarkable career.

What comes next for Lionel Messi?

Although his Argentina chapter has reached its conclusion, Messi’s football journey is not necessarily over. His international retirement marks the end of one major part of his career, while his future at club level remains a separate matter.

For Argentina, the challenge now is to prepare for the future without the player who has led the national team through an unforgettable era.

For Messi, meanwhile, the farewell represents the closing of a historic chapter — one filled with trophies, setbacks, redemption and lasting memories.

His final appearance will be remembered not simply for the result against Benin, but for the emotional connection between a legendary captain and the supporters who followed him throughout his journey.
