Marcus Rashford Warned Barcelona Could “Send Him Back” to Manchester United

Barcelona have been cautioned not to commit too early on Marcus Rashford’s future, with former England international Chris Waddle warning that the forward could yet be sent back to Manchester United if his standards drop.

A Loan with a Decision Looming

Rashford joined Barcelona on loan last summer, with the Spanish giants holding an option to make the move permanent for £26 million at the end of the season.

So far, the 27-year-old has made a strong impression — contributing five goals and seven assists in 13 appearances — including an assist for Fermín López’s strike in the recent El Clásico clash against Real Madrid.

Despite his promising start, sporting director Deco has made it clear that no decision will be made before the end of the campaign, preferring to assess Rashford’s long-term consistency before activating the purchase clause.

“He Can’t Afford to Slip” — Waddle’s Warning

Speaking to BOYLE Sports, Waddle praised Rashford’s talent but urged him to maintain peak form throughout the season if he wants to convince Barcelona to keep him.

“This season is critical for Rashford,” Waddle said. “He can’t afford to be inconsistent — every game has to be played like a cup final. If he wants a permanent deal at Barcelona, he needs to deliver top-level performances week after week.”

The former Marseille and Tottenham winger also highlighted financial obstacles that could complicate any transfer.

“A major stumbling block will be his wages. Barcelona simply don’t pay salaries at the level Rashford currently earns at Manchester United. That alone could make a deal difficult, even if they want him.”

Wage Demands and Transfer Strategy

Barcelona’s tight financial structure continues to shape their transfer plans. While Rashford has reportedly told friends that playing alongside Pedri and Lamine Yamal in Spain is a “perfect scenario,” Waddle believes the club will remain cautious.

“Barcelona are being linked with several players already. It wouldn’t be surprising if they explore other options for the left wing or central forward role next summer,” he added.

The Stakes Are Clear

For Rashford, the challenge is straightforward — sustain his form, justify his salary, and prove indispensable in a squad stacked with young attacking talent.

If he succeeds, he could earn a long-term future at Camp Nou.

If not, Manchester United might soon be welcoming him back to Old Trafford sooner than expected.
